James Ivory

James Ivory is a self-taught artist/graphic designer based in upstate NY. He looks to the masters of painting for inspiration. One of which being Picasso, whose influence can be seen in his work today. He studied graphic design for a year at SUNY Sullivan back in 2011. Currently creating artwork for his residency at The Black Library.

“I work with digital art and oil paint to narrate cultural events in a positive light. These narratives are often filtered through the silver screens, with a particular focus on black films. Complicated conflicts and movie plots about growing up in the hood are composed and freeze framed on the canvas to guide you to feel hope about this world. My work immerses you in a shelter of lively Photoshop Pantone saturated colors, with slightly offset sharpie-like contour lines fitting of an expert comic-book artist. I deconstruct the narrative and give you the paradox of a digitally manipulated hand-done painting with soul. Paintings that are delightful to the eyes, soothing to the heart, therapy for the soul. I invite you, the audience to draw upon your own imaginations and interpretations. With my work, I strive to convey empowering messages about self-expression and identity in an age increasingly shaped by media.”
